What is Trauma Informed Care?

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is a therapeutic approach that recognizes the significant effects of

trauma on individuals, aiming to create a safe and supportive healing environment. Its primary

goal is to understand trauma's impact while ensuring that services do not re-traumatize

individuals. TIC considers trauma's various forms—physical, emotional, psychological, and

spiritual—and acknowledges its lasting effects on mental and emotional health, which may not

always be obvious.

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?” trauma-informed care asks “What happened to you?”

The Key Principles of Trauma-Informed Care

  • At Care Cope Heal, trauma-informed care means creating spaces where both clients and staff feel truly safe—physically and emotionally.

    • Physical safety is about more than just the walls around us; it’s ensuring that our environment is secure, welcoming, and free from harm. We design our spaces to feel comfortable, calm, and supportive, so healing can take place without distraction or fear.

    • Emotional safety is about trust. We foster an atmosphere of compassion and respect, where individuals are protected from judgment, criticism, or re-traumatization. Every voice matters here, and every person deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported on their healing journey.

  • At Care Cope Heal, trust is the foundation of every relationship we build—with clients, staff, and our community. We believe that healing begins with honesty, clarity, and openness.

We commit to clear communication about our policies, procedures, and treatment approaches, ensuring that there are no hidden barriers to care. Clients are always kept informed and involved in their treatment process, while our team operates with integrity, consistency, and compassion in every interaction.

  • At Care Cope Heal, we recognize the power of lived experience. Individuals who have walked their own paths of trauma and healing bring invaluable wisdom, empathy, and hope to others on similar journeys.

Peer support is woven into the fabric of our programs—not only through formal roles, but through the shared understanding that mutual support and self-help are vital parts of recovery and long-term wellness.

  • At Care Cope Heal, we believe healing thrives in connection—with others, within community, and through relationships built on respect. We approach care as a partnership, where power and decision-making are shared openly and thoughtfully.

We honor the wisdom that comes from lived experience and value it just as highly as professional knowledge. Together, this balance creates a foundation where healing, growth, and true collaboration can flourish.

  • At Care Cope Heal, we center our work on client choice, personal strengths, and skill-building. We believe that healing grows when individuals feel empowered to take an active role in their journey.

Our focus is always on what clients can do, rather than what they cannot. Because trauma often involves a loss of power and control, we strive to restore both—supporting each person in developing confidence, resilience, and a renewed sense of personal agency.

  • We don’t prescribe to cultural stereotypes and biases. Our programs leverage the healing value of traditional cultural connections, and incorporates policies and procedures that are responsive to the cultural needs of the individuals served. We believe healing occurs within cultural context and that trauma can be rooted in cultural and historical experiences.

How We Implement Trauma Informed Care at Care Cope Heal

  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Trauma-Focused CBT is a specialized approach to therapy that helps children, teens, and adults heal from traumatic experiences. It combines education about how trauma affects the mind and body with practical coping skills, emotional processing, and supportive guidance.

Through TF-CBT, clients learn to manage difficult emotions, reframe unhelpful thoughts, and safely work through painful memories. This approach is structured, collaborative, and empowering—helping individuals rebuild a sense of safety, strength, and hope after trauma.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. When painful memories get “stuck,” they can continue to cause anxiety, triggers, or negative beliefs.

Through gentle techniques like guided eye movements or tapping, EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they feel less overwhelming. This allows you to gain relief from the past, build healthier perspectives, and move forward with more peace and control.

  • Somatic Therapy

At Care Cope Heal, we use somatic (mind-body) therapies to help you release the stress and trauma your body may be holding. Through gentle practices like breath work, grounding, and movement, you can restore balance, feel safer in your body, and build resilience. Somatic therapy offers a way to heal not just through talking, but by reconnecting with your whole self.
